Dutch-German Partnership to Accelerate Hyperloop Innovation Across Borders
Veendam, Netherlands / Emden, Germany – October 2025 — A major new initiative is set to boost technological innovation and sustainable mobility in the Dutch-German border region. The HyperBRIDGE project has officially launched, supported by the Interreg VI A Deutschland-Nederland program. This €4.8 million cross-border initiative brings together businesses, universities, and research institutes to position the region as a European frontrunner in the development of hyperloop technologies.
HyperBRIDGE aims to strengthen the regional innovation ecosystem by connecting at least 20 SMEs with major knowledge institutions through shared research, testing, and training programs. The project builds on the unique assets of the European Hyperloop Center (EHC) in Veendam and the goTube test facility at the Hochschule Emden/Leer — two of Europe’s most advanced hyperloop research sites.
At its core, HyperBRIDGE focuses on the development of high-impact, market-oriented technologies and systems that go beyond hyperloop applications, with spill-over potential for sectors like logistics, automotive, energy, and infrastructure.
From Vision to Technology
Hyperloop is a new form of high-speed, zero-emission transport that uses magnetic levitation and electric propulsion in low-pressure tubes to move passengers and goods faster and more efficiently than existing systems. While commercial adoption is expected after 2030, the technology is rapidly maturing — and HyperBRIDGE accelerates this momentum.
The project targets four key innovation domains:
Structural Health Monitoring for infrastructure, enabling real-time detection of stress and damage;
Pod-to-Pod Communication Standards, critical for the safety and coordination of hyperloop vehicles;
Hyperloop Operating Systems, integrating control, simulation, and digital twin capabilities;
Immersive Digital Twins, used for training, maintenance, and business model development.
In addition, the project will develop a serious game to simulate new business models and a Digital Knowledge Hub to facilitate long-term collaboration and open innovation.
Innovation Through Collaboration
The HyperBRIDGE consortium consists of companies and universities, including Dutch and German SMEs such as Omnidots, Concept7, V-Tron and Quantumfrog, alongside leading universities like Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Hanzehogeschool Groningen, and Hochschule Emden/Leer. The initiative is coordinated by the European Hyperloop Center.
HyperBRIDGE isn't just about R&D — it is actively designed to engage and empower regional SMEs. At least six companies are expected to commit to long-term follow-up projects. Throughout the project, hackathons, workshops, and training events will foster skills development and cross-border cooperation.
Strategic Relevance
Hyperloop technology is gaining institutional momentum across Europe. It is featured in both the Dutch Mobility Vision and Germany’s national coalition agreement. The European Commission has acknowledged hyperloop as part of the future of mobility, and the EU’s Hyper4Rail and Hyperloop Development Program are laying the groundwork for harmonized standards.
By aligning with these strategies, HyperBRIDGE ensures that the Dutch-German region contributes directly to shaping the European hyperloop ecosystem — and benefits from the expected economic and environmental returns.
A Greener Future, One Loop at a Time
Long-term, hyperloop could slash transport-related CO₂ emissions, reduce congestion, and open new business opportunities. A 2020 World Economic Forum report identified hyperloop as one of the 20 "markets of tomorrow," with an estimated European market value of €10 billion annually if just 350 km of hyperloop are built per year.
HyperBRIDGE turns this promise into tangible progress — fostering sustainable growth, regional competitiveness, and the emergence of Europe’s leading hyperloop innovation hub.
